If you've been riding for a while then you would already know how important it is to run bar ends on your handlebars, hopefully you didn't learn the hard way.
Handlebars can become sharp on the ends when there are no barends as the more they're hit against the ground the more they become more like a weapon which in turn can cause some serious damage to your body if you fall on top of them. It may sound like somewhat of a freak accident but trust me there are enough stories out there of it happening to people that it's 110% worth making sure you ALWAYS have bar ends on your bars.
First and foremost having any form of barend is better than none but we've put together this little article to help you make the right choice next time you're looking for a fresh set.
The different types of bar ends are broken down into 2 options really.... Alloy or Plastic.
Anytime you buy grips they'll most likely come with a set of plastic bar ends which is great because it really gives you no excuse for not running them. However there are a lot of options to choose from if you want a pair that will last longer. You will find that the more times you bail your bike and the concrete comes in contact with the barends they will deteriorate in quality which is the main downfall to the plastic style.
When it comes to plastic barends we would recommend the Odyssey Par Ends because they have a special plastic composite that wont shatter like most plastic bar ends.
Alloy bar ends are great because they are very durable, something like the Colony Konka bar ends will probably last the entire time you ride bikes.
You'll find some Alloy bar ends will slide over your bars and use a grub screw to fix to your bars and some will have the more traditional fitting style of a wedge clamp system inside of your bars and the Alloy end cap will fit outside of the bars width. This is something to take into account when cutting your bars as the width will vary slightly.
Average weight of a pair of Alloy bar ends is 20 grams, plastic is around 10 grams.
